The celebration of the Hindu festival Holi traditionally takes place in Amsterdam Zuidoost each spring, as participants gather around a bonfire, enjoy food, music and dance, and throw colourful paints into the air. However, the Holi Festival of Colours is set to take this festive celebration to a new level in the Netherlands, with thousands gathering inside the ArenA to enjoy DJs, live music and throw (and be doused in) brightly coloured paints.
This large European take on Holi celebrations was introduced in Germany last summer and proved to be a great success. Now also coming to such a large venue in Amsterdam, it may become one of the most colourful spectacles on the summer calendar.
The Holi Festival of Colour takes place inside the Amsterdam ArenA on Saturday, 22 June. Tickets cost 28.99 euros (early bird) to 34.99 euros and can be purchased online. Food, drinks and paint will be on sale within the stadium – you cannot take your own. The event is for adults (under 18s won’t be admitted, even under supervision). The ArenA opens at 12:00, then on every hour from 15:00 till 22:00, a countdown will mark the paint throwing. And although the paint washes off, it’s advised to avoid wearing any delicate clothing or accessories that could become stained.
